7 Ways to Prep for Lash Extensions

por Sebrena Krywulak

Eyelash extensions have gained so much popularity the last few years! They’re an easy way to look and feel better, but they take time. To get the most out of your lash appointment and ensure that your extensions look great for as long as possible, you should spend a little time preparing for your appointment!

By following these simple tips, you’ll ensure that getting eyelash extensions is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.

Here are seven easy ways to prep for your lash appointment (your lash artist will thank you - trust us!)

1. Stay away from caffeine and other stimulants 4 hours before your appointment

Many of us like to start the day with a cup of joe, but did you know that doing this can make your lash appointment more difficult for your lash artist?! Caffeine and other stimulants can make our eyelashes flutter. This makes it harder for your lash artist to apply the extensions correctly.

Your lash artist wants you to arrive relaxed (and this is a great time to practice self care and unwind)! If you’re wired from all the caffeine, you might have a harder time relaxing during your lash appointment. The next time you have an appointment for lash extensions, skip the coffee before your appointment. Hit the drive thru after your lash set, and treat yourself to your favorite latte!

2. Show up with a fresh face and clean eyelashes.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (we’re not actually yelling - we’re just really passionate about this mmkay?)
Please do not show up to your lash appointment with strip glue or mascara on your lashes. Lash extensions don’t stick to dirty lashes. If you want to get the most out of your lash extensions, arrive with a fresh face and clean lashes. Oils and makeup that you haven't washed off won't help the glue stick properly and this can lead to poor retention, a potential eye infection and other yucky stuff you wouldn’t want around your eyes!

If you’re going in for a lash fill - wash your lashes with a lash cleanser and shampoo brush, rinse thoroughly and brush your lashes before your appointment.

If this is your first time getting eyelash extensions or your appointment is for a full set, wash your face and eyelids with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and skip the eye cream and serum on the day of your appointment. Any oils that remain on your lashes can affect the application and your retention. Protect your investment sis!

The time it takes to clean and prepare your lashes shouldn't take more than a few minutes. During your appointment your lash artist will spend less time cleansing your lashes, and more time on applying your eyelash extensions, which will result in a  fuller look!

Bottom line - clean lashes are happy lashes! (PS. shop our Rinse + Repeat Lash shampoo here!)

3. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing.

Put on your cozies! Dressing comfortably for your eyelash appointment is one of the best pieces of advice we can give you. Depending on the set you booked, you'll be lying down for at least an hour or more for a fill, and up to 3 hours for a full set.  Make sure you're comfortable!

Wearing clothes that are easy to move around will help you relax and enjoy your service. You might even be able to sneak in a lash nap (don’t worry - your lash artist won’t judge if you snore - it’s a compliment - it means you’re HELLA relaxed)!

4. Bring headphones with you.

You’ll be lying down for a while - at least an hour! Lots of clients bring their headphones to their eyelash appointments to listen to music or podcasts. This can help pass the time and make your appointment more enjoyable!

Wearing headphones during your lash appointment also has some practical benefits. First, it can help block out noise from the salon, making it easier to relax. Second, it can help the time pass more quickly.

This is a PRO tip if you have sensitive eyes. If you have had lash extensions in the past but your eyes get red and irritated, it might be from talking during your appointment. Talking can cause your eyelids to flutter which allows glue fumes to enter the eye. Not talking during an appointment might alleviate this!

Lastly, it can let the technician know that you would rather not talk during the service. This can help if you want to sleep or just want to enjoy some quiet time! Your lash artist just wants you to be happy - don’t feel pressured to talk or be social during your appointment. You do you!

5.  Don't drink too much water

Staying hydrated is important. However, if you want to maximize your appointment time, it’s best to limit excess fluid intake. Try to limit drinking liquids 2 hours before your appointment, and use the bathroom right before your appointment.
Having to stop to use the bathroom in the middle of the appointment is a hassle for you and your lash artist. We’re not gonna make you squirm and hold it - but think about it - your eyes are taped closed!

Going to the bathroom will cut down the amount of time your artist has to apply your lashes by 10-15 minutes.

6. Arrive on time (or a little early)

We advise clients to show up a little early when getting eyelash extensions. This gives you time to fill out any paperwork and gives your lash artist time for a consultation and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions! We know your time is valuable, and we want you get the most out of your appointment! Arrive a few minutes early so your lash tech can give you the best service possible!

7. Bring some inspo photos

If your appointment is for a new set, bring some photos of lash sets you love! Keep in mind everyone's natural lashes and eye shapes are different, but photos will give your lash artist some inspiration when they are creating a custom map for your set!

Do you like lots of texture and a wispy look? Do you want longer or shorter lashes? Or a  more natural and low maintenance look? Bringing some pictures of what you like will help your lash artist determine the right length and thickness your natural lashes can safely handle while giving you a set of lashes you love.
